“Art is made from dreams, and visions, and things not known, and least of all from things that can be said. It comes from the inside of who you are when you face yourself.”
-David Smith (1959)
As we develop as individuals, our personalities can become shaped heavily by the pushing and pulling of external factors such as friends and trends. When those forces are contradicting to our true selves, we commonly conform seeking belonging. This causes us to become confused and unstable, yet it is in these times of conflict and struggle that we can learn the most about ourselves.
For me, art is both a lens for us to search within as well as a canvas for us to portray how we see the world. It provides us with a rich language to express that which there are no words for. I believe producing art of any kind takes bravery because we are sharing some of the most personal aspects of our lives through our creations.
Many artists confine themselves to a single category for their personal preference and area of specialty such as drawing, painting, or sculpture, but I prefer to combine multiple medias to build up the layers and complexity in my work. Stylistically, I am most inspired by the Abstraction Expressionist painters of the 1940-s and 50’s. What intrigues me about abstraction is the skill level required by the artist to demonstrate such a strong understanding of design and composition fundamentals that no subject is even needed.

My experience has evolved from drawing, to painting and photography, then ceramics and steel sculpture. The new area of my focus for the past two years has been on digital art and exploring the latest technologies available to artists such as Google’s Tilt Brush, which is a 3D virtual reality painting application. My hope in the future is to explore and develop ways that emerging technologies such as virtual and augmented reality can be utilized to provide viewers with exciting and innovative ways to interact with the work.
